Until recently, millions of Google users would see consistent results when they searched for terms related to your affiliate business. If you ranked second for “Windows Registry Tips” in Redmond, you’d be second in Duluth. But that’s all changed.
Google’s brand new personalized search means that results will no longer be identical for different users searching the same term.
Each user’s search results are now based upon their individual search history. And since no two users have the same search history, no two users will get the same results.
What does this mean for SEO and Affiliate Marketing?
Until now the objective of SEO has been nailing down one of the top ten spots in the identical results that Google returned for specific keywords for all users. Affiliates could just type their keywords into the search box and see the exact same results that everybody saw when they searched using the same search terms. It was easy to see where your website ranked.
Does Google Personalization spell the end of SEO?
Don’t go to Costco and buy SEO’s casket just yet, says Chris Boggs of Search Engine Watch.
Boggs argues “the demise of SEO won’t be caused by personalization.” SEO has changed and marketers are going to have to accept that ranking alone doesn’t equal SEO success. This, according to Boggs, is the “future (of) organic search metrics.”
Where does this leave you, the affiliate?
Our advice is to focus on the fundamentals. Measure the traffic and site conversions that you control and focus on on-page and off-page optimization. If you do so, your rankings will stay strong and your business will thrive in the midst of change.
Remember, SEO isn’t about rankings; it’s about getting your content in front potential buyers. That hasn’t changed.
In fact, personalized search might even be a shot-in-the-arm for your conversions. You might get less traffic, but the number of qualified visitors, and thus conversions, may rise.
